At least five students have been injured after a ceiling fan suddenly detached and fell inside a classroom during lessons at a government primary school in Narayanganj’s Fatullah.

The incident occurred around 11:30am in a second-grade classroom at Aliganj Government Primary School under Sadar Upazila, said Headteacher Mahmuda Ahmed.

Among the injured, two students have been identified only as Pranjal and Jahanara of Class 2.

The identities of the remaining injured students could not be confirmed immediately. All injured children received treatment at a local hospital.

Witness and former student Md Mushfiqur Reza Sajeeb said he had visited the school when the incident occurred.

“As soon as I entered the classroom, the ceiling fan fell. We were lucky it did not hit anyone directly on the head. It could have caused a major tragedy. Still, five students were injured,” he said.

Another former student and Vice-President of the Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry Abu Jafar said he had visited the school at the invitation of the head teacher when the accident took place.

“Several students were injured, and one is in critical condition,” he said, adding that the school building is in a severely dilapidated state and urgently needs reconstruction.

Headteacher Mahmuda also said the building had long been in a rundown condition, which led to the accident.

She added that an application for a new building has already been submitted.

Narayanganj District Primary Education Officer Ferdousi Begum said she was not aware of the incident and would investigate and take necessary action.
