A 13-year-old girl abducted from Dhaka’s Dakshinkhan was gang-raped and killed by five attackers, police say after recovering her decomposed body from Hatirjheel.

The girl, an eighth grader, went missing after she left home on Jan 16. Police recovered her body from Hatirjheel on Sunday, 17 days after she went missing.

Meanwhile, on Jan 30, police arrested Robin Hossain, 32, and Rabbi Mridha, 26, from Gazipur’s Sreepur and questioned them after they were remanded. The interrogation led to the mystery being solved.

Following information provided by the arrestees, police recovered the body, said Dhaka Metropolitan North Deputy Commissioner Raunak Jahan.

On Jan 19, the missing girl’s father filed a general diary with the Dakshinkhan Police Station, the deputy commissioner said at a press briefing on Monday. Later, the father heard from locals that a group had abducted his daughter near Joynal Market using a car on the evening of Jan 16.

An abduction case was filed over the incident on Jan 27 with the Dakshinkhan Police Station. Police started the investigation and arrested Robin and Rabbi following clues found on the victim’s phone.

“The arrestees were remanded for two days and after interrogation, they confessed their involvement in the incident,” said Deputy Commissioner Raunak.

“Based on the information, the girl’s body was found packed in a gunny sack in Hatirjheel on Sunday. Both arrestees gave their confessional statements on the same day.”

Citing the confession, the police officer said: “On the day of the incident, the suspects ensnared the victim and took her to a house in Mohakhali. Then they tied up her hands and legs, gagged her mouth, and five people raped her. At one point the girl died. Then Robin and Rabbi planned to hide the body. They packed it in a gunny sack and took it to Hatirjheel on a rickshaw. They then threw the body downhill from Hatirjheel road in the dead of night.”

Police have been working to arrest the others involved in the case, Deputy Commissioner Raunak said.
