A court in Dhaka on Sunday sent to jail a former lawmaker from Dhaka-10 constituency and ex-president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, in a case lodged over the murder of one Abdur Rouf in the capital’s Uttara area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiyak passed the order as police produced him before the court after the end of his three-day remand in the case.

Earlier on January 9, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain remanded Shafiul in the case. Police arrested him from his residence at Sector-4 on Road 13 of Uttara on January 8.

Abdur Rouf joined the anti-discrimination student movement rally on July 18 in front of Uttara BNS Centre. At one point, police and Awami League (AL) cadres opened fire at the protesters, injuring many. Rouf got shot in the chest and died on the spot.

On January 8, Rouf’s brother, Md Sakib Hasan, filed the case with Uttara West Police Station in this connection.
