Internet users in Bangladesh to face slow speed for three days

Internet users across Bangladesh may experience slow speeds or partial service disruption for three days due to scheduled maintenance work on the country’s second submarine cable system.

The service will be temporarily disrupted from 10:00 pm today (Thursday) to 6:00 am on April 13 (Monday), according to Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC).

The work is being carried out under a maintenance programme titled “S.1.5.1 Shunt Fault Repair” by the consortium of the country’s second submarine cable SEA-ME-WE-5, installed at Kuakata, the BSCPLC said in a notice issued on Wednesday.

According to the notice, the scheduled work will continue for four days, with the maintenance affecting traffic routed through the SMW-5 submarine cable, particularly circuits heading towards Singapore.

As a result, internet users may face reduced browsing speeds and intermittent service disruptions during the maintenance window.

However, BSCPLC said internet services through its other submarine cable systems will remain operational, and efforts will be made in coordination with the consortium to complete the work smoothly within the scheduled timeframe.

The company expressed hope that normal internet services would be fully restored once the maintenance work is completed.
