Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday said promotions in the Bangladesh Army must be based solely on merit, professional competence, integrity, leadership qualities and discipline, rather than personal preferences or political considerations, to build a modern and professional force.
Addressing the inaugural session of the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2026 at the Army Headquarters in Dhaka Cantonment, he said a professional military can only be strengthened by ensuring fairness and transparency in the promotion process, according to a release issued by the Prime Minister's Press Wing.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to BNP founder and Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman for his contribution to the modernisation and restructuring of the Bangladesh Army after independence.
He also paid tribute with profound gratitude to the martyrs of the War of Liberation, the war-wounded freedom fighters and members of the country's Armed Forces for their sacrifices.
Tarique Rahman further expressed deep respect for Army personnel who embraced martyrdom while performing duties in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Praising the Army's role in safeguarding the country's independence and sovereignty, he said the force has also been making significant contributions to maintaining internal peace and order, responding to natural disasters and supporting the civil administration whenever required.
The Prime Minister thanked the chief and all members of the Bangladesh Army for their continued professionalism and dedicated service to the nation.
Earlier, Tarique Rahman was received at the Army Headquarters by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman and the Chief of General Staff (CGS).
The Army chief expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for inaugurating the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2026.
Prime Minister's Defence Adviser Brig Gen (retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam and senior military officials attended the function.
Following the ceremony, Tarique Rahman joined a photo session with senior Army officers and signed the visitors' book at the Army Headquarters.
