The government is going to launch a sales programme of essential commodities under the initiative of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) across the country on February 16 on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
The sales programme for the fasting month will continue until March 28, 2025.
Regarding the issue, the TCB has sought approval from the commerce ministry to operate the programme.
The decision was taken to keep prices of essential items stable during the upcoming Ramadan.
During the drive, the government entity would sell some key essential items like edible oil, sugar, gram, date and lentils at subsidised rates to around 5.7 million smart card-holder families, said an official source.
A single family would be able to buy a maximum of one kg of sugar, two kgs of lentils, two litres of soybean oil, one kg gram and 500 grams of date from the TCB sales points.
This year, the sales will be coordinated in the city corporation areas and at the district and upazila levels by the local administrations, including deputy commissioners (DCs) and upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs), following the list of beneficiaries.
