The US Embassy in Dhaka released information and photos of his arrival in the capital on Thursday afternoon on Facebook.

The post quoted US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen as saying: "I am delighted to welcome to Bangladesh my friend, the US special envoy to South and Central Asia, Ambassador Sergio Gor. His visit will strengthen US-Bangladesh strategic ties and regional security and economic cooperation."

This is the first visit to Bangladesh by Gor, who has been serving as the US president's special envoy to the region in addition to his ambassador to India since September.

Foreign ministry officials said the US official will meet Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman at the State Guest House Padma on Thursday evening. He is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during his visit.

Khalilur described Gor's first visit to Bangladesh as an “exploratory or understanding visit”.

Gor was in attendance when Khalilur met his US counterpart Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Summit in the Philippines recently.

Asked about the topic of discussion during Gor’s Dhaka visit, the foreign minister said on Wednesday: "I have already met him in Manila, had talks, had meetings. We reviewed the relations between the two countries.

“You know, Bangladesh’s relationship with America is multidimensional, they also want to take the relationship further in that regard. And, he is not only the American ambassador to India, he is the American president’s representative for South Asia and Central Asia.”

Khalilur said, “This is his first visit to Bangladesh and since South Asia falls under his portfolio, Bangladesh is also part of it. As a first visit, we think it is an exploratory visit.

“He will want to understand Bangladesh. He will talk not only with us, but with many other stakeholders.”

Highlighting the possibility of Gor visiting the Rohingya camps, the foreign minister said that the envoy is aware of the Rohingya problem. The US is the largest donor in terms of foreign aid to the Rohingya, which Bangladesh acknowledges this with gratitude.

“We hope that he will go to the Rohingya camps and he will try to understand all the main aspects of the mutual relationship. For him, this is an exploratory or understanding visit and we will discuss it with him [on Friday].”

Trump described Gor as a “close friend” when he announced his appointment as the US ambassador to India in late August 2025.

In addition to publishing books written by Trump, Gor raised millions of dollars for the US president’s 2024 election campaign. He is also believed to have played a key role in appointing loyal officials to Trump’s second term in Washington.
