The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has advised the country’s four maritime ports to hoist distant cautionary signal no. 1 as the well-marked low in the Bay of Bengal intensifies into a depression.

The well-marked low became a depression on Friday evening, said Meteorologist Bazlur Rashid, reports bdnews24.com.

“There was some rain in the southern parts of the country, but it will clear up tomorrow,” he said on Saturday morning.

“The temperature is expected to drop today as the sky is cloudy and it will likely be low tomorrow as well. However, it will be some time before a cold wave hits.”

The BMD says that Khulna’s Koyra saw the most rain until 6am on Saturday morning, with Bhola, Barishal and other parts of the south seeing a bit of rain.

Bazlur said Panchagarh’s Tentulia saw the lowest temperature in the country at 10.4 degrees Celsius.

At 6pm on Friday, the depression was located 1,330 km southwest of Chattogram port, 1,280 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 1,195 km southwest of Mongla port, and 1,200 km southwest of Payra port. It is likely to move north-northeast.

The maximum sustained wind speed within 44 km of the depression’s centre is about 40 kph, rising to 50 kph in gusts and squalls.

The sea will remain rough near the depression's centre and the maritime ports at Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist distant cautionary signal no. 1.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

The long-term forecast for December says that one or two low-pressure systems will develop in the Bay of Bengal, which may develop into a depression or a cyclone.

A low developed in the Bay of Bengal on Monday night. It is the second such low to develop in December.
