Nine months after the fall of the Awami League government following a student-led mass uprising, former President Abdul Hamid has left Bangladesh.

According to multiple local media outlets citing sources at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Hamid departed the country in the early hours of Wednesday night. He boarded a Thai Airways flight bound for Bangkok at 3:05 am. It is reported that he was not accompanied by any close associates during the trip.

Hamid reportedly arrived at the airport around 11:00 pm on Wednesday. After completing immigration procedures and receiving clearance, he was allowed to leave the country.

A murder case was filed against Hamid on January 14 with the Kishoreganj Sadar Police Station. The complaint also names former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Saima Wazed Putul, and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.

Abdul Hamid served as the President of Bangladesh for two consecutive terms, from 2013 to 2023, during the Awami League’s tenure in power.
