North South University (NSU) organised a discussion on “Genocide Day 2022” on its campus in the city on Friday.

On this day in every year, the nation remembers the innocent martyrs and the heroic fighters with deep sorrow who gave their lives in the resistance of struggle.

Mr Azim Uddin Ahmed, chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), NSU, was present in the programme as the chief guest. Dr Nazrul Islam, visiting professor and also a valiant freedom fighter, was present as the keynote speaker, according to a statement.

The session was chaired by Prof Atiqul Islam, Vice-Chancellor, NSU, and moderated by M. Jamil Ahmed, Director, Public Relations Office, NSU. Prof M Ismail Hossain, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university, delivered the welcome speech.

Besides the programme, a special prayer was offered and a documentary film ‘Stop Genocide’ by Bangladeshi filmmaker Zahir Raihan was showed. NSU also observed a ‘one-minute blackout’ to mark 'Genocide Day', recalling the horror black night of March 25, 1971.

Speaking as the chief guest, Mr Azim Uddin Ahmed said, “March 25, 1971 was the darkest night in the history of Bangladesh. This night is a horrible chapter in the history of the Bengali nation. After the night of the brutal genocide of the Pakistani aggressors, Bangladesh woke up in 1971 at the dawn of the liberation war.”

In his speech, Prof Dr Nazrul Islam said, “Since our country became independent under the leadership of Bangabandhu, we have been able to become a middle-income country. We must not forget the history of our country.”

Vice-Chancellor Prof Atiqul Islam said, “The Pakistani aggressors carried out a brutal massacre on the innocent people of this country on March 25, 1971. It is the darkest night in the history of Bangladesh. Originally, on March 25, the entire nation united towards the liberation struggle, and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, with his extraordinary leadership and skill, made the dream of liberation among the people of Bangladesh turn into a reality and responded to the brutality of the Pak army.”

Among others, Prof ABM Rashedul Hassan, Treasurer, NSU, Prof Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Dean, School of Business and Economics, Prof Dr Abdur Rob Khan, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof Dr Javed Bari, Dean of School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Prof Dr Hasan Mahmud Reza, Dean, School of Health and Life Sciences, Prof Dr Gour Gobinda Goswami, Director, Office of Student Affairs, were also present on the occasion.
