Bangladesh reports two more dengue deaths, 573 hospitalisations in a day

Bangladesh has recorded two more deaths from dengue fever in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities this year to 137.

A total of 573 new patients have also been admitted to hospitals with the Aedes mosquito-borne disease during the period, raising the tally of hospitalisations this year to 34,984.

According to the bulletin issued by the Directorate General of Health Services on Monday, one of the patients who died was receiving treatment at Mugda Medical College Hospital, and the other at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Both patients were male, aged 24, and 30.

The highest number of dengue deaths in a single month this year was 41, recorded in July, followed by 39 in August.

The DGHS has reported 15 deaths this month.

In addition, 19 people died in June, 10 in January, three in February, seven in April, and three in May. No dengue patients died in March.

July saw the highest number of dengue hospitalisations this year, with 10,684 admissions. This was followed by August, with 10,496.

Another 3,508 patients were admitted this month.

Moreover, 1,161 patients were hospitalised in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, and 1,773 in May.

Of the new patients admitted in the past 24 hours, 155 were from the two Dhaka city corporations.

Additionally, 141 patients were admitted in the rest of Dhaka Division, 14 in Mymensingh, 83 in Chattogram, 104 in Barishal, and 31 in Khulna, 44 in Rajshahi, and one in Sylhet.

Currently, 1,720 patients are undergoing treatment in different hospitals nationwide with dengue.

Of them, 609 are admitted to hospitals in Dhaka, and 1,111 are outside the capital.

Bangladesh saw 101,211 hospitalisations from dengue in 2024, with 575 deaths, which is the third-highest annual caseload and the second-highest death toll on record.
