ACC raids Nagar Bhaban over 'fake fuel bills'

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched a raid at the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) headquarters amid allegations that officials misappropriated millions of taka by claiming false fuel expenses.

Sunday's drive at Nagar Bhaban, the DSCC headquarters, is part of a preliminary probe into the allegations by the graftbusters, according to officials.

The investigation focuses on fuel expenses recorded during a period when the city corporation offices were closed, according to ACC spokesman Akhtarul Islam.

“Nagar Bhaban was shut for 40 days, yet fuel costs amounting to millions of taka were claimed. The question is, where did this fuel go? That is what the ACC’s enforcement unit is investigating,” he said.

Officials said they were seizing documents and gathering information linked to the allegations.

The probe follows a report by the Bangla daily Prothom Alo, which reported that despite activities at Nagar Bhaban remaining suspended for 40 days during protests demanding that BNP leader Ishraque Hossain be handed over mayoral responsibilities, fuel bills running into millions were recorded against DSCC vehicles.

The ACC said the raid was based on those revelations.
