BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed said the letter sent to the Election Commission was the most important step in a year taken by the interim government, adding that the nation was waiting for this.
Earlier, the commission said on Thursday that it received a letter from the Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on holding the election in February 2026.
BNP will adopt the vision of the chief adviser to move the nation forward in the future, the standing committee member of the party said.
He further stated that his party is satisfied with the progress made in reforms and justice.
Calling BNP a pro-Bangladesh or centrist party, he said, despite ideological differences among political parties, the party is working to create an environment where everyone can sit together in the national interest. For this, all means are being discussed.
He made the remarks while exchanging views with journalists at his residence in Gulshan on Thursday.
Stating that he had higher expectations from the government, Salahuddin said that what it has achieved despite various obstacles was perhaps not possible. However, the nation's hopes were even higher.
"Despite the expectation being high among people from the interim government, however, because of the huge pressure of protests on various demands from different parties, the interim government might not achieve more than what we see.
The government had to deal with the bureaucracy of the fallen government, the broken economy, and the financial sector. Therefore, we can expect more, but it was impossible to do more," he added.
Expecting that laws and regulations will be formulated quickly to conduct the elections, the senior BNP leader said that the elected government will make constitutional reforms related to elections.
Besides, although there is no scope for changing the structure of the police overnight, they will have to be kept in order to conduct the elections. However, the army will play a key role, he added.
Salahuddin Ahmed said that the people want transparent elections.
"When the people want transparent elections, the role of law enforcement agencies will be secondary due to the mentality of the people and candidates."
Regarding the alliance, the senior BNP leader said that an alliance can be formed with any like-minded political party until the schedule is announced.
However, no decision has been made on the alliance yet, he added.
