The bodies of two madrasah students have been recovered 15 hours after they went missing while bathing in the Bay of Bengal at a beach in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf Upazila.

The bodies were found in the Lengurbil Lambarighat area of the Sadar Union of the Upazila around 5:30 am on Monday, said Muhammad Gias Uddin, the chief of Teknaf Police Station.

The dead have been identified as Nazrul Islam, 12, and Imran Hossain Babul, 13.

A group of 10-15 children went to the Beach Point area around noon on Sunday to play, OC Gias said, citing locals. At one point, they went to bathe in the ocean. Three of the children were then carried away by the current.

Hearing the cries of the children, locals rushed over and were able to recover the dead body of 10-year-old Nur Kamal. Both Nazrul and Babul had been missing since.

The three children were students of Ashrafia Darul Najat Hifzkhana madrasah located in Teknaf Sadar Union’s Khunkar Para.

OC Gias said: “Since the incident, police, the Coast Guard, Fire Service personnel, and local fishermen began rescue operations at various points of the ocean to look for the missing children. But they found no trace of them until the evening. Later, as it grew dark, the rescue operation was paused. However, the relatives continued the search on their own.”

“On Monday morning, the relatives found the bodies of the two missing children floating in the ocean in the Lengurbil Lambarighat area. They recovered the bodies and informed the police.”

According to OC Gias, the dead bodies of the children have been handed over to the family members.
