The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) on Tuesday strongly opposed the provision allowing whitening of undisclosed money in the next budget, arguing that it disincentivizes genuine taxpayers.
Although budget will be announced on June 2, many media reported that the interim government might continue the provision in budget to be placed for FY26.
CPD noted that there are two types of black money in the economy: one generated through illegal means, and the other resulting from existing system.
Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow at CPD, reiterated the organisation's longstanding opposition to the measure, saying it discourages honest taxpayers and undermines the integrity of the tax system.
Dr. Rahman added that Bangladesh's main economic challenge currently lies in the lack of investment at expected levels, which in turn affects employment generation.
Meanwhile, CPD Executive Director Dr. Fahmida Khatun said that he government should specify a date for the next general election, rather than providing a broad timeframe, such as "between December and June."
The CPD made these remarks during a media briefing held in dhaka to present its third analysis on the state of the economy.
