Death toll hits six after pickup van, autorickshaw collide in Rangamati

The death toll from the collision between a pickup van and an autorickshaw in Rangamati’s Kawkhali Upazila has risen to six, according to bdnews24.com.

The accident occurred around 10:15am on Saturday in Chairman Para of Betbunia union along the Rangamati-Chattogram road, said Kawkhali Police Station chief Md Saiful Islam Sohag.

He said three people died at the scene when a pickup travelling from Chattogram collided head-on with a CNG-run autorickshaw heading towards Rangamati.

Three other injured were rushed to hospital, where two of them succumbed to their injuries.

The remaining injured person was sent to Chattogram for advanced treatment, but he later died while undergoing care at AK Memorial Hospital in Raozan, Upazila Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Mohammad Ruhul Amin confirmed.

The victims have been identified as Md Abu Taher, 50, Mahbubur Rahman, 50, Zainal Abedin, Nurun Nahar, 40, Md Ijadul, 25, and a Marma woman whose full identity is yet to be confirmed.

Abdur Rahim, husband of the deceased Nahar, said: “My wife was on her way to Betbunia market by autorickshaw.

“The pickup hit them head-on, completely wrecking the autorickshaw and killing several of those inside, including my wife.”

Three of the bodies have been brought to Rangamati General Hospital for post-mortem examination, said ADC Ruhul.

The pickup van’s driver has been on the run since the accident, and police have launched a manhunt to apprehend him, OC Saiful said.
