The official sale of sacrificial animals commenced in the capital from Tuesday, ahead of Eid-ul-Azha which will be celebrated nationwide on June 7.
In line with tradition, temporary cattle markets-locally known as haats-began operating four days before the festival.
This year, a total of 19 cattle markets, including both permanent and makeshift ones, have been approved across the jurisdictions of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Among them, DNCC will host 12, while DSCC will accommodate seven.
However, the lease process for three of the proposed markets remains incomplete-one under DNCC and two under DSCC. Both city corporations have written to the Local Government Division seeking decisions on these unresolved leases.
Meanwhile, the DNCC's only permanent cattle market at Gabtoli will operate this year under a new leaseholder.
Alongside, temporary cattle markets have been established at several key locations across the city.
These include areas near the Mastul Checkpost in Khilkhet, adjacent to the Dhaka Polytechnic Institute in Tejgaon, the Bau Bazar area near Uttara Diabari's sectors 16 and 18, the Eastern Housing area in Mirpur Section 6, the 40-foot road in Basila of Mohammadpur, Ranabhola Avenue next to Uttara Sector 10, beside the Shutibhola Canal in Bhatara, under the Elevated Expressway in Khilkhet, near Rahmannagar by Kachukhet Bazar, Merul Badda Kitchen Market, and beside Iqra Madrasa in East Hazipara, Rampura.
