According to an amended ordinance of the National Freedom Fighters Council, members of the Mujibnagar government formed on April 10, 1971, will be recognised as ‘Bir Muktijoddha’.

However, those who assisted in the formation of the Mujibnagar government in various ways will be considered as associates of the liberation war.

The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued this new ordinance on Tuesday, stating that, the president of the Mujibnagar government Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, acting president Syed Nazrul Islam, prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad, finance minister M Mansur Ali, home minister A H M Qamaruzzaman, and foreign minister Khondaker Mushtaque Ahmed, all will be regarded as ‘Bir Muktijoddha’.

However, in the past, some employees were considered ‘Bir Muktijoddha’, but now their classification has been changed, and they are granted the status of co-fighters.

According to the new definition, individuals who, between March 26 and December 16, 1971, took part in war preparations inside the country, received training, or crossed the border into India for training and actively participated in the liberation war, will be considered ‘Bir Muktijoddha’.

In addition, members of the armed forces, East Pakistan Rifles (EPR), police, freedom fighters, the Mujibnagar government and its recognised forces, naval commandos, Kilo Force, and Ansar will also receive this status.
