Police fired tear gas and sound grenades to break up a clash between students of Dhaka College and City College clashed in the capital’s Science Lab area on Wednesday afternoon.
Army personnel were also deployed to help bring the situation under control.
The clash began at 2:45pm, blocking traffic in the area and causing severe traffic congestion on surrounding roads.
At least 30 students were injured and treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to police.
The situation began to subside around 4:30 pm after police intervention, with City College students retreating. Dhaka College students briefly gathered near the intersection before dispersing.
Traffic resumed around 5:30 pm after students left the area.
Shopkeepers in New Market and Chandrima Super Market locked their gates around 4:30 pm as the unrest went on.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (New Market Zone) Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman said the clash originated from a Tuesday altercation when some students of Dhaka College were locked in a scuffle with those of City College, over boarding a bus near Science Lab.
On Wednesday morning, Dhaka College students vandalised parts of City College, leading to the afternoon clash, Tariquzzaman said.
