Democratic Students' Union leader Abdul Quader has alleged that Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student front of the Jamaat-e-Islami, is pursuing politics in the residential halls of Dhaka University “at will” despite a ban on student politics.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, he alleged that Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists are running a shadow administration in the halls under the guise of disciplinary committees or batch representatives.
He claimed most hall disciplinary committees were linked to Chhatra Shibir politics, with their representatives chosen through rigged online votes, reports bdnews24.com.
Responding to the allegations, Dhaka University unit Shibir President SM Farhad claimed they were merely attempts to impose blame on their organisation.
The debate over whether student politics should be allowed in the residential halls of Dhaka University resurfaced on Friday, when the convening committees of Chhatra Dal were announced in 18 halls of DU, sparking various criticisms.
Additionally, a group of students took out a protest rally on the campus at midnight, demanding a ban on student politics in the halls.
In the face of their movement, Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan announced a ban on student politics in Dhaka University’s residential halls on Friday.
