A fishing trawler named ‘FB Sagorkonna’ sank in the Bay of Bengal near Kuakata, leaving six fishermen missing, while nine others were rescued after drifting at sea for four days.

The missing fishermen were identified as Abdur Rashid, Nazrul Islam, Rafique, Idris, Harun, and Kalam.

The incident occurred last Friday around 10:00 am, approximately 75 kilometres deep into the sea beyond the last buoy.

The trawler had left from Mohipur earlier that morning with 15 crew members on board, led by Abdur Rashid Majhi.

According to the rescued fishermen, after casting nets into the sea, the vessel was caught in a sudden storm with rough waves, causing the trawler to break apart and sink.

One fisherman went missing immediately during the chaos. The remaining 14 clung to bamboo and floats, attempting to stay afloat. Over time, five more went missing in the turbulent waters.

Eventually, the survivors drifted toward the last buoy area, where two other fishing trawlers spotted and rescued them on Monday night.

The rescued individuals were admitted to Kalapara Hospital on Tuesday morning.

A general diary (GD) was filed by trawler owner Kishore Hawlader on Saturday, said Mahmud Hasan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mohipur Police Station.

"We are continuing our efforts to locate the missing fishermen," the OC said.
