The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has formed a six-member committee comprising officials from income tax, customs, and VAT departments to prepare a work plan for separation of the tax policy formulation from its implementation.
The committee will work in coordination with the advisory committee on revenue board reform and meet the finance adviser, along with representatives from the income tax, VAT, and customs wings.
The committee members include: Income Tax members GM Kaikobad, Alamgir Hossain, and Muttasim Billah Faruqui; VAT member Dr Abdur Rouf; and Customs members Farzana Afroz and Md Mustafizur Rahman.
The Ministry of Finance (MoF) issued an ordinance in mid-May to bifurcate the revenue board.
In response to the ordinance, revenue officials and staff staged demonstrations and observed a pen-down strike demanding repeal of it.
Addressing the concerns, the MoF instructed the NBR to hold discussions with the advisory committee members and relevant stakeholders to find a resolution.
Following the directive, the NBR on Thursday issued an office order announcing formation of the committee.
