Three more people have died of dengue in a daily count, taking the tally of fatalities from the mosquito-borne illness this year to 48.
As many as 492 new patients were hospitalised across the country in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of hospital admissions this year to 12,763, bdnews24.com reports.
Of the three people who died, two were from the Barishal Division and one from the Khulna Division, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed in a bulletin on Monday. All of them were under hospital care.
So far this year, June has seen the highest number of deaths, with 19 fatalities. Six deaths have been reported in the first week of July. Additionally, 10 deaths occurred in January, three in February, seven in April, and three in May. Notably, no deaths were reported in March.
As for hospital admissions, 2,467 patients were admitted during the first week of July. In comparison, 1,161 were admitted in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, and 5,951 in June.
In the past 24 hours alone, the Barishal Division recorded the highest number of new admissions at 154. Other divisions reported the following numbers:
In addition, 89 patients have been hospitalised in the two city corporations of Dhaka, 69 in the rest of the Dhaka Division, 10 in Mymensingh, 51 in Chattogram, 54 in Khulna, 61 in Rajshahi, three in Rangpur and one in Sylhet.
Currently, 1,306 patients are undergoing treatment for dengue in hospitals across the country.
Of them, 382 are hospitalised in the capital, and 924 outside the capital.
In 2024, a total of 101,214 patients were hospitalised due to dengue nationwide, with 575 fatalities reported.
This marks the third-highest number of hospitalisations due to dengue in the country's history, while the death toll ranks as the second-highest.
The DGHS has been keeping records of dengue hospitalisations and fatalities since 2000.
Since then, a record 321,179 dengue hospitalisations were logged in 2023. That year also saw the most deaths, with 1,705.
In 2022, a total of 101,354 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across Bangladesh, marking the second-highest annual count.
