In a move to address Bangladesh’s high vulnerability to climate change, the government has proposed an allocation of Tk 1.0 billion in the national budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26) to support ongoing climate resilience initiatives.

While presenting the budget on Sunday, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed highlighted the urgent need to strengthen climate adaptation measures in light of the “depth and seriousness of climate change risks” facing the country.

The proposed allocation will fund a range of initiatives under the Climate Change Trust Fund, including measures to combat air, water, and soil pollution, improve waste management, and enhance environmental development. The fund will also support efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change, assess related health risks, and strengthen the climate adaptation capacity of women.

A key focus of the initiative is the evaluation and protection of coastal ecosystems, which remain highly susceptible to climate-induced hazards such as rising sea levels and salinity intrusion.

To ensure transparency and effective implementation, the Bangladesh Climate Change Trust is introducing a digital monitoring system for all approved projects. According to the finance adviser, this system is expected to be fully operational by December 2025 as part of the government’s broader reform agenda.

Bangladesh, frequently ranked among the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, is placing increased emphasis on institutional capacity-building—including media engagement—to foster national climate resilience.
