A money exchange trader was shot and robbed of about Tk 2.20 million, including foreign currencies, in broad daylight in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Monday morning.
According to police and witnesses, Md Mahmudul Islam, 55, owner of Mahmud Money Exchange, was travelling to his office at Mirpur Section-10 from his residence in Mirpur Section-6 by a battery-run rickshaw.
The mugging occurred around 9:55 am on Abdul Baten Road, between the stadium swimming pool and the fire service office, reports UNB.
Police said six muggers on two motorcycles intercepted Mahmudul, shot him on the left side of his back, and made off with a bag containing the cash.
Locals rushed to his aid and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.
Upon receiving information, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mirpur Division) and officials from Mirpur Model Police Station visited the scene and launched an investigation.
Mirpur Police Station officer-in-charge Sajjad Hossain said efforts are underway to collect CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the attackers. “A drive is underway to apprehend the culprits,” he added.
The victim hails from Kartoa village under Madarganj upazila in Jamalpur district.
