Authorities have seized around 400kg of horse meat in Sirajganj’s Kazipur Upazila and jailed two men for attempting to smuggle it for sale.

The drive was carried out on Friday morning in the Meghai jetty area along the Jamuna River, said Kazipur Upazila administrator (UNO) Mustafizur Rahman.

The convicts are Kawsar Ali Palash, 35, son of Arzullah from Nitai Bhanga village in Kishoreganj Upazila of Nilphamari, and Shariful Islam, 45, son of Joynal Abedin from the same area.

A mobile court sentenced both men to two months in jail and fined them Tk 1,000 each. They will face an additional month in prison if they fail to pay the fine.

UNO Mustafizur said eight horses had been slaughtered in a char area, and around 400kg of meat was being transported in a pickup van to Dhaka for sale when the operation was conducted.

“Two transporters were detained and sentenced by the mobile court. The seized meat was later buried and destroyed,” he said.
