If you're seeking a destination that combines natural beauty and mystery, look no further than Boga Lake. This enchanting lake, situated over 1,246 feet above sea level, is one of the most peaceful tourist destinations in the country.

Known as Bangladesh's most picturesque natural lake, Boga Lake is just 18 kilometres from the administrative centre of Ruma Upazila in the Bandarban District.

Its origin is shrouded in mythological tales, which entice young adventurers and thrill-seekers to embark on a trek from Ruma to discover this captivating natural reservoir of blue waters.

Folk tales

Boga Lake's formation has sparked scientific debates, with geologists speculating that it could be the result of a volcanic eruption, meteorite impact, or even a landslide.

According to local tribal myths among the Bom, Marma, Mro, Khumi, and Tripura tribes, Boga Lake was formed when a dragon, known as 'Boga' in the Bawm language, resided in a cave within the mountains.

The locals used to offer cattle as a tribute to the dragon god, but when a few individuals killed the dragon, the peak transformed into a submerged lake, drowning the surrounding villages.

Although there is no concrete evidence to support this legend, the presence of the legendary dragon and the lake's volcanic appearance coincides with the context of a dormant volcano.

Beauty of Boga Lake

The main attraction of Boga Lake is the lake itself, surrounded on three sides by mountain summits covered in dense bamboo forests.

The natural blue water of the lake is a sight to behold, a true treat for the tourists' eyes. It's worth noting that the locals, primarily the Bawm people, are dedicated to maintaining the cleanliness of the area. Visitors, too, must be conscious of their responsibility to preserve the pristine condition of this remarkable place.

The calm and peaceful ambience, coupled with the warm hospitality of the locals, further enhanced the area's beauty. In Boga Lake, the lives of the people reflect the cleanliness and tranquillity of the water itself.

One of the finest experiences of Boga Lake travel is spending some time in Munlai Para, renowned as the cleanest village in the hilly regions. It's between Ruma and the Lake, and tourists can have a delightful lunch there.

One can also visit the market run by the Bawm Tribes near Munlai Para, where locally produced handmade crafts are sold.

The natural beauty of Boga Lake is simply mesmerising. The spiral Shongkho River flows approximately 15 kilometres east of Ruma Upazila Sadar. The lake itself sits atop a hill in the Palitai range, 29 kilometres from its shore, covering an area of about 15 acres.

Throughout the day, visitors are captivated by the ever-changing hues of the lake. The cool, calm water instantly relieves the fatigue of the journey, presenting a bluish colour that merges with the sky above.

The contrast between the blue water, surrounding mountains, and the touch of green in the landscape creates a natural collage that is truly a feast for the eyes.

The exhaustion of traversing the challenging terrain fades away in the lake's depths, leaving behind a beautiful green oasis.

Touring season

The best time to visit Boga Lake is during winter when the weather is more favourable. While visiting during the rainy season can be challenging due to the conditions, adventurous travellers still flock to witness the scenic beauty of Boga Lake.

Exploring Boga Lake at night is an entirely different experience from the daytime. If you're lucky enough to visit on a moonlit night, it may become one of the most memorable nights of your life.
