A total of 100 unauthorised battery-run rickshaws were seized from the city's Asadagate area on Tuesday during a drive to check movement of the unfit vehicles on the main roads.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police jointly conducted the drive.

DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz, DNCC Zone-5 Zonal Executive Officer AN M Badruddoza, Superintendent Engineer (Civil), Traffic Engineering Circle Khondoker Mahbub Alam and other DNCC and DMP officials were present during the drive.

Speaking on the occasion, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz said survey showed that 20 per cent of accidents are caused by these battery-powered rickshaws.

"These rickshaws were made without considering policy or passenger safety. Often they run over pedestrians, and due to uncontrolled speed, accidents occur frequently," he added.

He said manufacturing workshops of such rickshaws and charging points will be shut down with the help of electricity supply companies.

He further said DNCC will arrange training for rickshaw-pullers in a bid to educate them on road safety within this month.

"Only those who will pass the training will get valid licenses and will be allowed to run rickshaws made by the authorised companies in specific areas of the city," he said.

The DNCC administrator also said one rickshaw license will be issued against one national identity card.
