12 killed as Navy bus collides with microbus in Bagerhat’s Rampal

The death toll from a head-on collision between a Navy bus and a microbus in Bagerhat’s Rampal has risen to 12, according to police and hospital authorities.

The accident occurred around 4pm on Thursday near the Belai Bridge on the Khulna-Mongla Highway, said Md Jafar Ahmed, chief of Katakhali Highway Police, bdnews24.com reports. 

According to the officer, the Navy bus was heading from Mongla while the microbus was traveling from Khulna when the two vehicles collided.

"Four microbus passengers, including three women, died on the spot. Locals rescued the others and rushed them to hospitals," Jafar said.

Sukanta Pal, a medical officer at Rampal Upazila Health Complex, said six victims were initially brought to the facility.

"Four were dead on arrival. Two others were in critical condition and were shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH)."

The duty doctor at the emergency department told bdnews24.com that 11 people from the Rampal crash were brought to the hospital.

"Eight of them were declared dead on arrival. Three others are currently undergoing treatment for their injuries," the physician said.

The identities of the dead and the injured have yet to be confirmed.
