Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam on Wednesday said some 4,000 assistant sub-inspector (ASI) positions will be filled through both recruitment and promotion ahead of the national election.
Among them, half of these posts will be filled by direct recruitment while the other half through promotions, he said while talking to reporters after a meeting with senior secretary of Public Administration Ministry Mokhlesur Rahman at the Secretariat.
“We came to the Ministry of Public Administration today regarding this matter. Some amendments to the regulations were required which will facilitate our recruitment process,” said the IGP.
Replying to a question whether these recruitments are being made ahead of the upcoming election, Baharul said, “As you know the Chief Adviser recently gave approval in principle for the recruitment of several forces. We are now working on implementing those decisions.”
Meanwhile, Mokhlesur Rahman said a police delegation had come to discuss major recruitments through amendments to a couple of police regulations. A joint meeting was held to ensure the process moved quickly, and if the order could be issued that day, recruitments, including those for ASIs, would proceed soon.
Mokhlesur said the Finance, Law, Public Administration, and Home Affairs ministries had collectively created the posts, including those for ASIs.
He mentioned that certain recruitment rules had been amended, adding that the police and Ansar are the first forces deployed at election sites.
Mokhlesur said recruitment and training were underway, with constables and higher-ranking officers, including Superintendents of Police, overseeing the process, and those efforts had been accelerated to ensure the force was prepared even before the election schedule was announced.
Issuing a warning, he said any officer assigned to election duties and showed bias towards an individual or party would be withdrawn and administrative action would be taken against them under existing laws.
