Adolescent birth rate or childbirth by women aged between 15 and 19 remains higher in Bangladesh, a recent report by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has revealed.
According to it, every 1,000 teenage girls give births to over 60 children each year which is much higher than neighbouring India.
The report titled 'State of World Population 2025' states that there has been an improvement comparing to the situation over the decades as the figure was over 150 in 1995 and nearly 100 in 2015.
However, total fertility rate-live births per woman-has declined significantly during the period as it was almost five in 1995 and dropped to below two in recent years.
Countries in Asia and Latin America have experienced a steady decline in total fertility over the past two decades, said the report. At the same time, there has been a sharp decline in adolescent birth rates among girls aged 15-19, it added.
The report further said that countries like Bangladesh and Nepal will hopefully experience rapid declines in adolescent childbearing in the near future.
Underage pregnancy causes economic costs, hamper educational attainment and employment, said the report.
