BD reports highest single-day spike in COVID-19 deaths and cases

Bangladesh on Sunday saw the highest single-day spike of new cases and fatalities with 2,545 confirmed cases and 40 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The previous records in terms of daily infections and deaths were 2,523 and 28 that were reported on May 29 and May 30 respectively.
With the latest figures, the total tally of infections rose to 47,153 while the death tally reached 650.
Like other days, DGHS additional director general (administration) Prof Dr Nasima Sultana came up with the disclosure on Sunday's virtual news bulletin.
She also said some 406 people were recovered from the respiratory disease in the last 24 hours, taking the overall number of recovery to 9,781.
The bulk of infections and deaths came on the day from when the government eased lockdown with allowing public transports and offices. It also caused serious concerns of caregivers who fear further deterioration of the situation.
Bangladesh reported the first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.
In an effort to contain the virus, the government has since March 26 enforced a countrywide shutdown but numbers of new cases continue to increase.
Dhaka city has become the biggest hotspot for coronavirus with more than one-third of all cases so far detected in the country.
Globally, as of 3:04pm (BST), the deadly virus infected 6,175,290 people, according to worldometers.info, a website that provides real-time updates.
Of them, 371,228 died, 2,744,566 recovered, the data show.
Coronavirus was first reported in China in December last year.
As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
