Assailants have shot and injured Saiful Islam Aftab, a local member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party in Natore, in front of his home, police say.

The incidents occurred around 8:30 am at the town’s Station Bazar on Sunday, said Inspector Abul Kalam Azam of Natore Sadar Police Station. Saiful was a former president of the district Jubo Dal, a unit of the opposition party.

Shahidul Islam Bacchu, the district convener for the BNP, said assailants riding motorcycles fired shots at Saiful after he got out of his home in the morning.

“His family and neighbours took him to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. He is about to undergo surgery in the ICU,” he added.

Saiful’s younger brother Aslam Hossain blamed the attack on Awami League workers.

“After he was shot, my brother rushed back home, with bullet wounds in his back, hip and right arm. His condition is not good,” he said.

However, district Awami League General Secretary Shariful Islam Ramzan shrugged off the accusation. “Awami League workers or leaders are not responsible for the attack.”

Officer Abul Kalam said he had heard of the incident but the police were still looking for the details. “We’ve yet to receive any official complaint.”
