BNP mayoral candidate in recently-held Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections Ishraque Hossain has filed a petition with the election tribunal seeking cancellation of the gazette on DSCC election result published on February 4.

The petition was filed with the court of Dhaka’s joint district judge Utpal Bhattacharya on Tuesday, said Ishraque Hossain’s counsel Advocate Tahirul Islam Tawhid.

Earlier on Monday, BNP mayoral candidate in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Tabith Awal also filed a petition with the same tribunal seeking cancellation of the election result of DNCC.

Advocate Tahirul Islam said, “We have filed the petition seeking cancellation of the gazette in which barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was declared as the mayor of the DSCC, and sought reelection in the petition.”

The petition raised allegations of irregularities, corruption, and illegal practices in the DSCC elections.

The Awami League mayoral candidates were elected in the DSCC and DNCC elections held on February 01 this year.

In the DSCC election, AL's Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was elected mayor. Taposh secured 424,595 votes, while his nearest rival BNP’s Ishraque got 236,512.

The Election Commission on February 04 published the gazette of the results naming the newly elected mayors and councilors of both the Dhaka city corporations.
