The Bangladesh Railway (BR) is set to resume its parcel service on a limited number of routes from Friday to facilitate cheap transportation of daily local agricultural produce and household utensils amid the ongoing lock down situation.

According to officials, initially the parcel service will be restarted on Chattogram-Dhaka, Dhaka-Mymensing-Jamalpur-Dewanganj bazaar and Jesshore-Dhaka routes.

“We have planned to utilise parcel wagons which have been lying idle since passenger train services were suspended. If people use those for transportation of local vegetables and fruits, we will then plan to continue it,” said Mia Jahan, additional director general (operation).

Initially, three to four wagons will be run with an engine, he said.

The BR, the state-owned train service operator, has been continuing its container service even though it kept its passenger services suspended in parallel with public holidays which the government announced on April 26 to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
