As the curtain falls on the interim administration that governed Bangladesh for the past 18 months, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has reached the final days of his tenure.
State news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that Yunus delivered a farewell address on Monday to officers and employees at his office.
He later joined a photo session with all staff members working there.
The mass uprising had its roots in protests that began in early July 2024, when students took to the streets demanding reforms to the government job quota system.
The movement escalated into widespread violence and ultimately transformed into a student-people’s uprising.
Sheikh Hasina was ousted in the upheaval and fled the country. She is currently living in exile in India.
Three days after her removal, on Aug 8, an interim government led by Yunus assumed charge of the country.
Even as the movement was under way, leaders of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement had begun discussions on a post-Awami League administration, with Yunus emerging as a possible head.
A parliamentary election and referendum were held on Feb 12.
Following a landslide victory, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to form the new government on Tuesday.
Breaking tradition, preparations are under way to hold the oath ceremony outside Bangabhaban, at the South Plaza of parliament.
Senior government officials and BNP leaders said the new cabinet, led by Tarique, will be sworn in on Tuesday afternoon, after newly elected lawmakers take their oaths there in the morning.
