A doctor at the national cancer hospital has been stabbed in Dhaka’s Mohakhali in a sudden alley attack.

The incident occurred around 3:30pm Monday in a lane behind the old BRAC University building, Banani Police Inspector AKM Moin Uddin said.

The victim, 50-year-old Ahmed Hossain, serves as deputy director of the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH).

He was admitted to the hospital following the attack.

Inspector Moin Uddin said, “He was returning home from his workplace when two to three unidentified individuals stabbed him in his right hand and back before fleeing the scene.”

Police, citing the injured doctor, said he had been receiving threats for several days from a foreign number demanding “tender-related” influence.

Investigators are examining whether the stabbing is linked to those threats.
