A fire has erupted on the Chattala Express, a train travelling from Chattogram to Dhaka.
The blaze took hold of the train in Faujdarhat of Sitakunda at 7am on Thursday.
Ehsan Ali, assistant officer of the Kumira Fire Service Station, told bdnews24.com that the train caught fire during its journey to Dhaka this morning.
The flames were brought under control by 8am. The train’s power car and an air-conditioned coach were damaged in the fire, he added.
He said it initially appears the fire may have started from the train’s power car, though the matter remains under investigation.
The fire broke out after the intercity train left Chattogram for the capital at 6am, the fire service official added.
The incident has temporarily suspended train services from Chattogram to Sylhet and Dhaka. Even though the route has double lines, trains were halted for safety reasons.
Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan, divisional railway manager (DRM) of Railway East Zone in Chattogram, said: “The Dhaka-bound intercity train Subarna Express left Chattogram station slightly later than its scheduled 7am departure.”
A probe committee has been formed by Railway East Zone to investigate the incident at Faujdarhat, the DRM said.
The divisional transportation officer (DTO) has been appointed to lead the inquiry.
Railway East Zone officials noted that the intercity Chattala Express was carrying 18 carriages. The power car, positioned sixth from the rear, and one AC coach were damaged.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
