China has warned that no external power should be allowed to damage its growing relationship with Bangladesh, as Beijing signalled strong support for the new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with senior officials, the Chinese ambassador said China–Bangladesh cooperation benefits the region and “should not be affected by any foreign forces”.
“Our cooperation with Bangladesh, like our relations with other South Asian countries, fully benefits the people of the region and is supported and embraced by them,” he said.
“Our cooperation is not targeted at any third party and should not be affected by any foreign forces. Any attempt to undermine our cooperation with Bangladesh or other South Asian countries will be doomed to failure.”
The envoy said the meeting was held in a “cordial and friendly atmosphere”, with both sides holding “practical and in-depth exchanges” on a range of issues including bilateral relations, development cooperation and the Rohingya crisis.
He also welcomed the election results.
“The parliamentary election, which has just concluded, was held in a smooth and orderly manner. It is a victory for democracy in Bangladesh and also a victory for the Bangladeshi people.”
China, he said, attaches great importance to deepening relations with Bangladesh as a “friendly neighbour and comprehensive strategic cooperative partner”.
“China supports the new government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, in exercising smooth governance,” the ambassador said.
He noted that the foundation of the relationship dates back decades.
“As you are well aware, China–Bangladesh relations were founded by his [Tarique] father, the late president Ziaur Rahman, and developed and matured during the time his mother served as prime minister.”
“Now we look forward to working under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Our cooperation will reach a new height.”
China also reiterated its support for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and stability.
“China supports Bangladesh in maintaining solidarity and stability, and in safeguarding national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.”
Beijing also backs Dhaka’s “Bangladesh First” policy and its efforts to play a greater role internationally, the envoy added.
“China stands ready to carry forward cooperation in all sectors with the new government of Bangladesh. I am fully convinced of a better future for China–Bangladesh relations.”
On specific initiatives, the ambassador said China remains ready to move forward on the long-discussed Teesta River project.
“The Teesta project is something we have discussed with the Bangladesh side for a long time. China stands ready, and we look forward to working with the new government to proceed with these projects.”
