GAIBANDHA, July 09: Two days' continuous rainfall has transformed the urban landscape in Gaibandha, leading to immense suffering for its dwellers.

Since Tuesday night, different roads and alleys in various neighborhoods of Gaibandha town have remained waterlogged under the influence of incessant rain.

In some places, rainwater has accumulated almost knee-deep, causing extreme sufferings to the public.

City residents including pedestrians, students and businessmen complained that due to improper drainage system such a situation of water stagnation is created even after a short rainfall during every monsoon. Residents of Gaibandha municipality suffer the most for the phenomenon.

During a visit on Thursday afternoon, it was seen that internal streets and main roads in Master Para and Munshi Para in Gaibandha town were submerged due to severe waterlogging.

People from all walks of life faced extreme suffering while walking on the waterlogged roads.

Some were walking with wet clothes, some with clothes folded.

Several important roads and residential areas including the Civil Surgeon's Office, Churipatti in Kanchari Bazar, Sachin Chaki Road and KN Government Primary School were found waterlogged. Water has entered the courtyards of houses in some places. Conscious citizens say construction of unnecessary drains, shrinking of drain spaces and haphazard dumping of garbage here and there have intensified the situation of water stagnation.

In the middle of the Government Girls High School road, students and guardians were seen walking through the school's western gate facing waterlogging. At this time, many students were seen walking with shoes in their hands.

Abdur Razzak Reza, father of a girl student at the Government Girls High School, said, "My daughter's half-yearly exams are going on. It will end soon. Waterlogging on the road near the school gate is causing suffering to students, guardians and everyone in general. Urgent and permanent steps are needed to solve the problem."

According to the

Gaibandha Water Development Board, 51 millimeters of rainfall has occurred in the district in the last 24 hours. At 12 noon on Thursday, Rangpur Meteorological Center in-charge Md. Mostafiz said that the rainfall that started last Tuesday night may continue for next two days. In this regard, Gaibandha Municipality Administrative Officer Abu Hanif said the connecting roads of the neighbourhoods are very narrow and the drains are narrow also.

As a result, the amount of rainfall that falls cannot be drained through these narrow drain.

Consequently, it overflows roads and causes waterlogging.
