A woman has allegedly been murdered with a machete in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur district, according to the police.

The deceased was identified as Smriti Rani Pal, 24, wife of Kabya Sarkar, reports bdnews24.com.

The incident occurred around 9:45 pm on Monday at the home of Gopal Mistry in the Kamarpatti area of Bormi Bazaar, said Zainal Abedin Mondal, chief of Sreepur Police Station.

Police recovered Smriti's body and sent it to the morgue at Gazipur’s Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

The motive and identity of those involved in the killing remain unknown.

At the time of the incident, Gopal Mistry's wife, Rupkona, was asleep in a nearby room.

“I go to the temple for morning prayers every day, so I tend to sleep early,” Rupkona said.

“Just as I was preparing to sleep, I suddenly heard Smriti scream, calling out to me. I rushed outside and found her bleeding on the veranda. As I got closer, she collapsed.”

Locals revealed that Smriti had been living with her husband and child at her grandfather’s home in Kamarpatti due to a rift with her father.

Sumon, general secretary of the Sreepur Upazila Puja Celebration Committee and Smriti’s neighbour, said, “Around 9:30 pm, I heard loud screams from Gopal Mistry’s house. When I arrived, I found Smriti lying on the veranda, covered in blood.

"She was taken to a nearby hospital and then transferred to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead.”

Smriti’s father, Sunil Pal, said, “My daughter married two and a half years ago with our family’s approval. About a year later, she had a son. I spoke with Smriti around 9:15 pm on Monday. She mentioned that her husband, Kabya, had left for India in the evening. Later, at 10 pm, Kabya called to tell us something had happened to her. I rushed to the Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, where I found out she had died.”

Dr Sudeb Chakraborty, from the hospital’s emergency department, said that Smriti had already died by the time she was brought to the hospital around 10:40pm.

"She had severe wounds on her neck and near her right wrist caused by a sharp object. Her body was then handed over to the police.”

Zainal revealed that a blood-stained machete and a pair of shoes were found at the scene.

Two suspects, including Smriti’s husband, are currently in police custody, and an investigation is ongoing to uncover the motive behind the murder.
