A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed the manager and another employee of Apon Coffee House in the capital’s Khilgaon area on a one-day remand each in connection with the assault of a young woman.
Those remanded are manager Al Amin and staff Shuvo Sutradhar, reports UNB.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Rakibul Hasan passed the order when Sub-Inspector Md. Mohsin of Rampura Police Station, also the investigating officer of the case, produced them before the court seeking a five-day remand for interrogation.
During the hearing, defense lawyers appealed for rejection of of the remand plea and sought bail for the accused while the prosecution opposed the bail petitions.
A video that went viral on social media shows the accused assaulting a young woman in front of Apon Coffee House in Taltola area of Khilgaon.
The incident occurred on April 11 and the viral video triggered public outcry.
According to the case statement, the accused sexually harassed the woman at the coffee shop around 5:20 pm on the day.
When she protested, they beat her with a stick and drove her away in an attempt to cover up the matter, it said.
Police detained the two accused on Monday night and showed them arrested after filing the case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
