Bangladesh has recorded five more deaths from dengue fever over the past 24 hours, while another 668 people have been hospitalised.
The latest fatalities bring the tally of deaths to 187 this year, while the total number of hospitalisations stands at 43,841.
According to the health directorate’s bulletin on Wednesday, two of the five deaths occurred at Mugda Medical College and Hospital, while one fatality each was reported at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Kurmitola General Hospital, and the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute.
The victims included two aged 60, alongside others aged 50, 55 and 12. Three were female, two male.
With Wednesday’s admissions, hospitalisations in September climbed to 13,365 -- the highest monthly figure in 2025.
The previous peak was in July, which saw 10,684 hospitalisations.
Monthly admissions earlier in the year were: 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, and 10,496 in August.
September has also recorded the highest number of dengue deaths this year, with 65 fatalities. The next highest was in July, with 41 deaths.
Other monthly death counts are: 10 in January, three in February, none in March, seven in April, three in May, 19 in June, and 39 in August.
Of the 687 new patients in the past 24 hours, 167 were from the two Dhaka city corporation areas.
Another 126 were from elsewhere in the Dhaka Division, 106 in Chattogram, 35 in Rajshahi, five in Rangpur, 41 in Khulna, 30 in Mymensingh, and 158 in Barishal.
At present, 2,016 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country. Of them, 757 are in Dhaka and 1,259 outside the capital.
The health directorate has tracked dengue cases since 2000. The worst outbreak came in 2023, when 321,179 patients were hospitalised and 1,705 died.
