Dhaka braces for storm, thundershowers

A nor'wester may hit Dhaka and nearby areas, accompanied by rain, thundershowers and possible gusty winds, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

On Sunday, the BMD said the weather may turn rough in and around the capital between 1pm and 6pm.

Winds from the west or northwest may blow at 10-15 kmph, with gusts temporarily rising to 40-50 kmph, according to the forecast.

Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana said that the conditions had developed under the influence of northerly or northwesterly winds.

That may bring gusty winds along with rain or thundershowers in Dhaka, she added.

The five-day forecast also points to wider unsettled weather across the country.

For Sunday, the Met Office said rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning were likely in parts of the Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and at one or two places in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barishal. Hail may also occur in isolated areas.

The Met Office said day and night temperatures may fall slightly across the country on Sunday.

Scattered rain or thundershowers are also likely to continue over the next few days, before the activity eases toward the end of the five-day period.
