Dhaka, New Delhi agree to increase rail connectivity

Bangladesh and India have agreed to boost railway connectivity between the two countries following growing demand of the passengers.

The decision came during a meeting between Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan and his Indian counterpart Piyush Goel at in New Delhi on Tuesday, reports BSS.

After the meeting, Indian railway minister announced that frequency of Kolkata-Dhaka Moitree Express and Kolkata-Khulna Bandhan Express would be increased following passenger’s demand.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh railway minister told the media that they had proposed the frequency of journey of Moitree Express should be increased to six days a week from the existing four days and frequency of Bandhan Express from the present one day in a week to three days a week.

But, officials of the two countries would finalise the details “very soon”, said the Indian railway minister while briefing newsmen after the meeting.

He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to announce some major joint initiatives on connectivity during the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s New Delhi visit in October.

Responding to Goels remarks, Sujan said the main aim of Bangladesh premier’s visit to India was to congratulate the new government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

About the visit, he said during his visit they wanted to know the major development of India’s Railway system which is one of the best in the world.

The Bangladesh railway minister arrived here on Saturday on a six-day official visit to witness the developments of the Indian railway.

Sujan will depart New Delhi for Dhaka on Thursday evening.
