Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has confessed to his involvement in crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising, according to statements made before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

Standing in the dock of the tribunal on Thursday, the former police chief submitted a written statement expressing his willingness to unmask others involved in the atrocities. Prosecutors and legal representatives confirmed that he has now become a approver or state witness in the case.

This development comes after the International Crimes Tribunal formally charged three individuals—ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and Mamun himself—in connection with atrocities committed during the uprising.

The tribunal has also scheduled dates for the prosecution to begin presenting its opening statements and witness testimonies.

Of the three charged, Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan have been declared fugitives in the case.
