A fire that broke out at the Kolmilota Bazar in Dhaka’s Bijoy Sarani has been brought under control after nearly two hours of effort.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence said the blaze was reported at 5:15 am on Tuesday, bdnews24.com reports.
It was then contained around 7:00 am thanks to the work of 10 firefighting units, according to Anowarul Islam, a spokesman for the Fire Service.
He said, “The Fire Service received word of the fire at 5:14 am. Then, the first three units from the Fire Service arrived at the scene around 5:20 am and began trying to tame the blaze.”
A total of 10 firefighting units from the Tejgaon, Mohammadpur, Mirpur, and Siddiquebazar fire stations eventually joined the operation.
So far, no casualties have been reported, Anowarul said.
After the blaze was brought under control, Fire Service Director (Operation and Maintenance) Lt Col Md Mahmudul Hasan said they had rushed to scene when the incident was reported on the emergency hotline 999.
The ground floor of the market was given over to a wet market and a butcher’s shop. An electronics store with a service centre was on the upper floor.
The fire was brought under control around 7:00 am with the help of firefighters and locals, Hasan said.
“We have not yet been able to estimate the damages,” he added. “We are still fighting the fire. We will be able to inform you about the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage after an investigation.”
