A fire has broken out on an oil tanker at the outer anchorage in the Bay of Bengal.

The Coast Guard reported the fire on the ship “MT Meghna Trader” on Thursday morning, reports bdnews24.com.

The Coast Guard's media wing said that personnel rushed to the scene after the fire was reported at 7:25 am.

In addition to the force's Shyamal Bangla and BCGT Pramatta ships, two high-speed boats, and personnel from the Chittagong Base and Patenga Outpost have started work on extinguishing the flames.

The fire on the outside of the ship was brought under control at 11:15 am, but the fire inside was still burning, a Coast Guard official said.

Twenty-two crew members have been safely rescued from the tanker.

Information on the cargo and the ship’s ownership has yet to be confirmed, but the details will be released once the fire is extinguished, they said.
