A Mymensingh court on Wednesday convicted five people and sentenced them to life imprisonment for killing a man over a land dispute in 2023.
Mymensingh District and Sessions Judge Farhana Ferdous handed down the punishment.
The convicts are Abdur Rashid, 41, son of Shukkur Ali; Jashim Uddin, 50; his wife Hurena Khatun; their son Riyad, 25; and Jonaki Akter, 38, daughter of Abdur Rashid, all of Chakpara village in Trishal upazila, reports UNB.
The court also fined Tk 50,000 each, in default to suffer six more months of rigorous imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, there had been longstanding enmity between Hafizul Islam and Jashim Uddin over the ownership of a piece of land.
On June 19, 2023, supporters of Jashim, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked the house of Hafizul and assaulted Nurjahan Begum.
At one stage, Alamin, nephew of Hafizul, was stabbed by the convicts when he tried to save Nurjahan, leaving him dead on the spot.
Hafizul Islam later filed a case with Trishal Police Station.
