A Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand for former Janata Bank chairman Professor Abul Barkat in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC had sought a three-day remand, but Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain approved two days after hearings on Wednesday.

Barkat was arrested on July 10 and sent to jail the next day.

The ACC filed the case on February 20, accusing Barkat and 22 others of embezzling Tk 2.97 billion from Janata Bank through loans to AnonTex Group.

The ACC alleges that Barkat and former Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman colluded in the fraudulent disbursement.

Barkat is a former chair of Dhaka University’s Economics Department and ex-president of the Bangladesh Economic Association. He served as Janata Bank chairman during a previous Awami League government.
